Our Fashion Bibles

They bring the international trends to our coffee tables. They give us insight into the lives of celebrates through craftily put together interviews. The dazzling models and clothing give us aspiration that a world of glamour and luxury await us! They take us to a land of colour, culture, sex and style. Indeed they are Fashion magazines. Everybody like myself who lives for fashion hears a calling when they see those eye-catching covers with the big bold font stand before us. Fashion magazines prove to be a bible for the style conscious as they feature the month’s Ten Commandments to live by in the fashion world. I have been a magazine lover from such a young age. My first one was not so much fashion related; it was the famous (R.I.P) T.V hits with the actor from Party of Five on the front. From then on, my cousin's and I made it a ritual to purchase TV hits and Smash Hits weekly and of course to top up our 'poster walls' in our bedrooms with the glossy content. On a more fashion related note; I still remember my first copy of DOLLY magazine that my mum so ‘generously’ brought me. I was only perhaps 7 at the time and I took advantage of mum’s distraction. There in the aisle of the supermarket; mum was in deep conversation with my cousin and aunt. Meanwhile; I was captivated by what I saw before me. As I tugged on my mother’s arm; pleading to let me buy the magazine; she was too lost in conversation and without thinking she put it in the trolley along with the other items. As we were leaving I quickly snuck the magazine and hide it in my jacket until we got home. There I sat on my bed; getting lost in a land of fashion and beauty that stood before my eyes. Oh, how I wanted to be those young models; whose clothing glistened and provoked a strong desire within me. I wanted everything. I wanted to leap from my pink doona cover and burst into the world that existed in those pages. My fantasy land was ruined, when I stupidly decided to recite aloud a section of the famous ‘Dolly Doctor’ at the dinner table. Obviously I didn't understand what I was saying; but unfortunately I was banned from reading Dolly until I was a little 'older.' Lucky for me, I still knew where my older cousin hid her library of them. To this day; my bookshelves are stacked with magazine after magazine; as it would be a fashion sin to dispose of these works of art. Unfortunately; there has been talk of our magazines in the future to be replaced with online versions. I sure hope that this is not the case and that they will remain in order to honour our cravings for fashion, inspiration and change forever more..

  1. Great post, for me the Fashion Bible is still Vogue. I have been collecting them for years, as well as the ones I used to steal of various female relatives. I also try and schedule an evening in when I know it's going to arrive so I can sit and pour over it with a glass of wine!x
